What is L.I.T.L.C.?
The Long Island Toy Lending Center (L.I.T.L.C.) is a resource center which allows children with developmental disabilities and their families to have fun and learn at the same time. L.I.T.L.C. is a not for profit agency founded in 1986.
What does L.I.T.L.C. do?
L.I.T.L.C. focuses on the child's ability, not on their disability. The center teaches children through play and counsels parents on using play to help their child. The children and their family select conventional and/or adapted toys that can be borrowed on a monthly basis.
L.I.T.L.C. is important to any child with any disability. Toys selected from the varied inventory at L.I.T.L.C. can accommodate children with learning disabilities to children who disabled. The children who go to L.I.T.L.C. participate from birth to about 12 years of age.
Why is L.I.T.L.C. important?
L.I.T.L.C. helps families realize their child can play and participate in many different ways. As we say "play their way". The center is a system for family support.
How does L.I.T.L.C. work?
Family visits are made by appointment. After an initial visit with the parents, the director meets with parents, the child and siblings. During each hour long monthly visit the families choose 4-6 toys which are loaned for the intervening month. Farmingdale Public Library and the East Marina Center, Lido Blvd. in Point Lookout contain toys and a play area. The East Marina Center houses the directors office. The center is grateful to the Farmingdale Public Library Board of Trustees and to the Town of Hempstead for allocating space for the Centers which are so important to the children and families.
